ResumoThe diagnosis of a malignant melanoma in a pure albino patient was clearly established by electronmicroscopic demonstration of premelanosomes and melanosome structures in the amelanotic cancer cells. It appears that the melanocyte is necessary for the development of this cancer, but the metabolic pathway for melanin production is not. The latter is a guide to the chemotherapeutic control of melanomas. Removal of nevi or birthmarks in albinos may prevent the development of this cutaneous malignancy.
