Preliminary results on between and within twin set variation in insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) and some relationships with performance traits in identical twin heifers

Blood samples were collected from eight sets of Simmental crossbred identical twin heifers at 291. 328, 254, 656 and 684 days of age and were assayed for serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). The between twin set intraclass correlation for IGF-1 at these ages was −0.08±0.38, 0.25±0.35, 0.62±0.23, 0.68±0.21 and 0.54±0.27, respectively. Residual correlations of serum IGF-1 concentrations with weights taken at the same ages ranged from 0.29 (P > 0.10) to 0.74 (P < 0.01). Heifers with higher serum IGF-1 concentrations at 291, 354, 656 and 684 days of age tended to be taller at 291 and 656 days of age with correlations ranging from 0.25 (P > 0.10) to 0.61 (P < 0.05). Correlations of IGF-1 with weight gains were variable in sign and generally nonsignificant. Results indicate that serum concentrations of IGF-1 are positively related to body weight and hip height of beef heifers. La corrélation intra-classe entre couples a été de -0,08±0,38, 0,25±0,35, 0,62±0,23, 0,68±0,21 et 0,54±0,27 respectivement à ces différents âges. Les corrélations résiduelles entre la concentration sérique d'IGF-1 et le poids au même âge ont varié de 0,29 (P > 0,10) à 0,74 (P < 0.01). Les génisses ayant des concentrations sériques d'IGF-1 plus élevées aux âges de 291, 354, 656 et 684 jours, ont eu tendance á être plus grandes aux âges de 291 et 656 jours, les corrélations allant de 0,25 (P > 0,10) à 0,61 (P < 0,05). Les corrélations entre les concentrations sériques d'IGF-1 et le gain de poids ont varié de sens et n'ont généralement pas été significatives. Au total elles sont liées positivement au poids et à la hauteur au garrot. Blutproben wurden von acht gekreuzten, identischen Simmentaler-Zwillingsfärsen im Alter von 291, 328, 354, 656 und 684 Tagen genommen und untersucht auf Serumkonzentrationen des Insulin ähnlichen Wachstumsfaktors I (IGF-1). Die zwischen Zwillingssets Korrelationen innerhalb Klassen von IGF-1 betrugen für diese Altersstufen −0.08±0.38, 0.25±0.35, 0.62±0.23, 0.68±0.21 und 0.54±0.27 resp. Residuenkorrelationen zwischen Serum IGF-1 Konzentrationen und den, bei gleichem Alter erhobenen Gewichten betrugen zwischen 0.29 (P > 0.10) und 0.74 (P < 0.01). Färsen mit höheren Serum IGF-1 Konzentrationen bei einem Alter von 291, 354, 656 und 684 Tagen tendierten grösser zu sein bei einem Alter von 291 und 656 Tagen mit Korrelationen zwischen 0.25 (P > 0.10) und 0.61 (P < 0.05). Korrelationen zwischen IGF-1 und der Gewizhtszunahme unterschieden sich in den Vorzeichen und waren allgemein nicht signifikant. Die Resultate weisen darauf hin, dass Serum Konzentrationen von IGF-1 positiv korreliert sind mit dem Körpergewicht und der Widerristhöhe von Färsen.
