Claude Quillet was born at Chinon, in 1602; not a great deal is known about him, but the very name of his birth place calls up the picture of Jeanne d'Arc, singling out Charles VII from all his nobles and persuading him to hasten to the relief of Orléans. It recalls too another remarkable character, Rabelais, the merry vicar of Meudon, and a credit to the medical profession. Quillet studied medicine, gained a measure of success and then incurred the enmity of Richelieu and others powerful in political circles. He defended Urbain Grandier, the priest of Loudun, accused of witchcraft, of sending Astaroth to torment the inmates of an Ursaline convent in the town. Relatives of Sourdis and of the great Richelieu were among those dwelling in the nunnery.
