John Arbuthnot's statistical “proof” of divine providence ( Philosophical Transactions 27 (1710), 186–190) provoked an exchange of views among a number of reputed European mathematicians. This article gives an account of the controversy and discusses some of its statistical aspects, in particular the early notions about significance testing that are to be found in the debate. John Arbuthnots statistischer “Beweis” für die göttliche Vorsehung ( Philosophical Transactions 27 (1710), 186–190) führte zu einem Gedankenaustauch zwischen mehreren angesehenen europäischen Mathematikern. Dieser Aufsatz berichtet über die Kontroverse und diskutiert einige ihrer statistischen Aspekte, besonders die frühen Ideen über Signifikanztests, die in der Debatte anzutreffen sind.
