Resumo

Manyodorous components have been detected in both liquid swine manure1 ~5) and solid swine manure.6>7)It has been clarified that the main components contributing to the malodor of piggeries are alcohols, fatty acids, phenols, and indoles.7>8)In a previous paper,7) it was shown that the odor of young pig manure was somewhat different from that of adult pig manure, but it is still uncertain as to how the concentration of each odorous component changes with growth. This paper describes the variation patterns of odorous components in pig feces with growth.Procedures for the separation of odorous components from feces and the methodsof analysis were the sameas already reported.7>9)Quantification of the compounds whoseauthentic materials were not obtained was carried out using analogous homologues. All concentration values were not corrected with recovery coefficients.Pig feces were collected within 5 hours after excretion from eight pigs born on June 24, 1980 who have been carefully bred at the National Institute of Animal Industry. These pigs were the first cross between Landrace and Hampshire, carried out at the National Institute of Animal Industry. The pigs were fed on mother's milk until 43 days following birth, and then powdered milk until ll weeks old. After that, they were fed on a normal diet prepared by the National Institute of Animal Industry. This diet contained almost the same ingredients as a commercial formula feed.Nearly every week samplings were carried out on the feces of pigs aged 43 to 155 days old.The feces of baby pigs fed on their mother's milk had an obscure rather than bad odor. The odor of the feces of pigs fed on powdered milk became worse. The feces of pigs fed on a normal diet evolved a bad odor similar to that of a piggery.
