Resumo

We discuss the feasibility of using a semiconductor microball as an optical bistable element. We analyze the bistability conditions using whispering-gallery modes and compare the bistability parameters for a semiconductor band-band transition with the bistability parameters for a transparent medium that has a third-order nonlinearity. The semicondutor material provides a better contrast ratio by a factor of ∼2.5 for an external signal power of ∼100 times less.
