Resumo

The local structure around Eu3+ ions in sodium germanate glasses was investigated via the phonon sideband associated with the 5D0 ← 7F0 transition of Eu3+. It was found that the positive charge of Eu3+ was compensated by non-bridging O atoms (NBOs, GeO⊖) of GeO4 units rather than by the excess negative charge of GeO6 units. It was also found that the number of pairs of NBOs and Na+ ions (GeO⊖Na+) around Eu3+ increased with increasing sodium content. The variation in the inhomogeneous linewidth was explained by the effect of the number of these pairs.
