Resumo

The relationship between vasovagal syncope (fainting) and fear of blood and injuries (B/I) was investigated in 378 college students. Significantly more females (17%) than males (7%) reported having fainted in the presence of B/I stimuli. Females also reported more B/I fear, as assessed by the Mutilation Questionnaire, than males and fainters reported more fear than non-fainters. A greater proportion of fainters, relative to non-fainters reported family members who also fainted to B/I stimuli. The results are discussed in terms of implications for understanding the acquisition of B/I fears, phobias and fainting.
