ResumoThe fauna composition and frequency of sandflies in six rural localities ofPrudentópolis municipality, State of Paraná, Brazil are reported here. The sandflieswere captured between 6:00 pm and 1:00 am, with Falcão traps in several monthsof 2008 and 2009. A total of 1,429 sandflies were captured, representing sevenspecies. Nyssomyia neivai (73.3%) predominated at all localities. The highest hourlyaverages of sandflies occurred in dwellings (10.71), chicken houses (10.25), riparianforests (6.46) and pigpens (5.80). The environmental characteristics of the localitieswhere the sandflies were captured showed that conditions were appropriate for thetransmission of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. The knowledge of the fauna, the frequency of sandflies and the form of occupation of the environment, may help in the choice of the most appropriate methods to reduce the density of sandflies inperidomicile and domicile.
