This article argues for a new approach to Spanish television in general, and to serious Spanish drama in particular, which reflects recent changes in the latter's popularity and quality. Drawing on TV studies in the UK and Spain by scholars and media professionals such as John Ellis, John Caughie, Manuel Palacio and José Miguel Contreras, it addresses both theoretical problems (such as specificity, history, the national, the text, and the everyday) and practical conditions (current changes in technology, business, legislation, content, audiences, and markets). As a case study of 'witnessing' and 'working through' (two fundamental characteristics of televisuality), the article examines the series concept and a single episode of the long running period drama Cuéntame cómo pasó.Este artículo propone una nueva aproximación a la televisión española en general y, más concretamente, al drama español, reflejando los cambios actuales en su popularidad y calidad. Tomando como punto de partida los estudios televisivos realizados en el Reino Unido y en España por investigadores como John Ellis, John Caughie, Manuel Palacio y José Miguel Contreras, el artículo abarca tanto problemas teóricos (la especifidad, la historia, lo nacional, el texto, y la cotidianidad) como prácticos (los cambios en la tecnología, el comercio, la legislación, el contenido, los públicos, y los mercados). Como ejemplo de dos características fundamentales de la televisualidad (el 'testimonio' y la 'elaboración'), el artículo examina la conceptualización general de la serie histórica Cuéntame cómo pasó, así como un capítulo de la misma.
