HEINEMANN has been identified with airplane design and development for most of his career, having first started with the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1926 as a draftsman. In the years to follow, he was chief draftsman for International Aircraft, and in 1927 was Assistant Chief Designer of the Moreland Aircraft Co. In 1932, he joined the then Northrop Corporation (which later became the El Segundo Division of Douglas Aircraft Company) as a project engineer and designer. In 1936, he was made chief engineer of that division. In 1958 he became Vice President—Military Aircraft Engineering for Douglas. In 1960 he was Vice President of Guidance Technology, Inc., and in 1962, he joined General Dynamics as Corporate Vice President. He was responsible for the design and development of the following aircraft, among others; the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber, the A-26 Invader Attack Bomber, the AD Skyraider Attack Bomber, the TB2D Torpedo Bomber, the F3D Skynight Jet Night Fighter, the A3D Skywarrior Jet Heavy Attack Bomber, the F4D-1 Skyray Jet Interceptor, and the A4D Skyhawk Jet Light Attack Bomber. Mr. Heinemann is a registered mechanical engineer in the State of California. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Astronautic Society and an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers. He also holds an Honorary Membership in Tau Beta Pi and membership in the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Association Trancaise des Ingenieurs et Techniciens de l̂Aeronautique, the American Ordnance Association, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the National Academy of Engineering, the Aviation Hall of Fame and the National Aeronautical Association. Among his many awards and citations, Mr. Heinemann has received the Sylvanus Albert Reed Award-1952, the Collier Trophy-1953, the Southern California Aviation Man of the Year Award-1954, Federation Aeronautique Internationale Paul Tissandier Diploma-1955 and the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, U.S. Army.Search for more papers by this author MR.
