ResumoAmerican military broadcasting was established to provide entertainment and information to U.S. forces stationed overseas. Serving the half‐million service personnel and their families stationed in and around West Germany, the American Forces Network, Europe (AFN) is the military's largest and most complex overseas system. This essay describes the network, its audience, and the dilemma it faces in trying to serve military interests without losing credibility with an audience accustomed to the traditional American system of nongovernment broadcasting.
