ResumoAssessing theories allows for decision making based on consistent and adequate structures. In this study, we analyze Rational Action Theory (RAT) and its approach and adequacy to study nursing phenomena. Meleis’ theory assessment model was used for interpretive analysis, specifically focusing on the contagion circle. We looked for journals indexed in LILACS, cataloging the knowledge areas the studies were developed in and the addressed foci. Results evidenced eleven publications in psychology, nutrition and nursing. The theory has been predominantly used in health, as an instrument to identify factors acting as positive or negative influence determinants in the realization of a specific behavior. This theory is pertinent to address phenomena in different nursing activity areas, as it focuses on human behavior. Key words: Theory; Nursing; Analysis; Models; Behavior.
