ResumoPerimortem cesarean section in the out-of-hospital setting is a rare and emotionally taxing occurrence. As a leading cause of maternal death, trauma occurs in 5% of all pregnancies, over half of which are attributable to motor vehicle crashes. 1 Connolly AM Katz VL Bash KL et al. Trauma in pregnancy. Crit Care Med. 2005; 33: S385-S389 Crossref PubMed Scopus (88) Google Scholar The decision to perform perimortem cesarean section by emergency care providers can be difficult, especially in the limited out-of-hospital environment, given the time constraints, personnel training, comfort level, and available resources. This technique has only been reported twice in the medical literature, with relatively poor outcomes. 3 Bowers W Wagner C Field perimortem cesarean section.
