ResumoA novel diagnostic system is presented in order to measure the two dimensional intensity distribution of CO2 laser beams. Beam diameter, divergence angle and maximum intensity are calculated from contour lines of constant intensities. The evaluation of beam parameters by the contour lines yielding 90% of the total laser power is suitable for any laser beam, including asymmetric distributions and intensity distribution of stable and unstable resonators. Several examples of the focal area are presented for various commercial laser systems including the relation to material processing.
