ResumoFlood control and flow regulation projects on the Assiniboine River are described. The paper also describes water management problems that were not anticipated prior to construction of these projects. Complaints have been received from landowners affected by the Shellmouth Reservoir, from Delta Marsh wildlife interests regarding overflows from the Portage Diversion, and from landowners downstream of the Portage Diversion. It has been claimed that water quality at Brandon has deteriorated due to algae blooms on the Shellmouth Reservoir. Concerns have also been expressed about high water temperatures below the thermal electric generating station at Brandon. Problems have been experienced with the City of Portage la Prairie’s water supply intake as well as with the Assiniboine River dykes between Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. These problems as well as remedial actions are described. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role which the Assiniboine River will play in the future as a major source of supply for much of southern Manitoba.
