New Haplomastodon findsfrom the Late Pleistocene of northern Ecuador

New mastodon remains were collected in the Carchi Province, northern Ecuador. The levels from which the fauna was collected are referred to the Late Pleistocene (Late Lujanian Mammal Age). On the basis of this fossil material, we conclude that probably only one species of Haplomastodon was present in Ecuador, most of tropical South America, and temperate southwestern Brazil. At the present state of knowledge we feel it convenient to classify the different Haplomastodon demes of this faunal province as Haplomastodon ex gr. waringi (Holland, 1920). De nouvelles pièces de mastodonte ont été récoltées dans la Province du Carchi, au Nord de l'Equateur, dans des niveaux attribués au Pléistocène supérieur (Lujanien supérieur, Age Mammalien). A la suite de cette découverte nous pensons qu'il n'y a probablement qu'une seule espèce de Haplomastodon en Equateur, la plus grande partie de l'Amérique du Sud tropicale et la zone tempérée du Sud-ouest du Brésil. Nous pensons qu'il est plus convenable de classer tous les différents dèmes de Haplomastodon de cette province faunique comme Haplomastodon ex gr. waringi (Holland, 1920).
