ResumoSuperconducting powders and pellets of Y-Ba-Cu-O were prepared by a new solution route. Nitrates of Y, Ba and Cu were heated with a controlled amount of glycerol to get a dry powder which on suitable heat treatment gave high grade YBCO powder/pellets. Characterisation was done by X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and also by measuring the surface area, carbon-content, bulk-density, transition temperature and the critical current. The pellets could be densified to 94% theoretical density (TD) and had a superconducting transition width of 1 K. The critical current densities were in the range of 200–500 A/cm2.
