ResumoIn inner Sogn (Sogn og Fjordane, western Norway) the wide range of human-influenced vegetation types has been formed and maintained by three main farming techniques: lopping (pollarding/ coppicing), haymaking and grazing. The following types are described: coppiced woodlands, pollarded woodlands, forest margin communities, wooded pastures, ‘open’ pastures, ‘open’ meadows, wooded meadows, wetlands and mires. They represent: (1) cultural-historical and ecological qualities; (2) striking visual and aesthetic landscape features; (3) valuable recreation areas; (4) important reserve areas for grazing and hay meadows. Some human-influenced vegetation types are maintained by the use of traditional cultivation techniques. Others are under great pressure from extensive encroachment or disuse. Their preservation depends entirely on the continuation of traditional forms of use and harvesting.
