Resumo

In the study by Hawkins and associates, the extracorporeal circuit consisted of a pump without use of an artificial oxygenator; therefore, the placenta was the sole source of gas exchange. The low perfusion rates (109 mL * kg-' * min-') during extracorporeal circulation were shown to result in inadequate gas exchange, implying inadequate placental function. In this system it is likely that placental flow (had it been measured directly) would have been in the range of 25 to 50 mL
