The characteristics of digital audio tape (DAT) that make it the medium of choice for back-up memory, namely, gigabit capacity, high data density, and high data reliability, are described by the author. These properties make DAT useful for software distribution, data interchange, and file retrieval. The development of DAT, a spin-off from high-fidelity recording, is examined. Avoiding, preventing, and correcting errors, which are especially important in DAT because its high bit density means that even a small defect in the tape can affect many bits, is discussed. Problems posed by the acceleration and deceleration of fast searching are considered. The future potential of DAT technology is assessed. >
