Resumo

A lower bound to the limit pressure of a flush oblique cylindrical branch in a spherical pressure vessel is computed using a non-linear programming method. The stress resultants in the branch and vessel are expressed in terms of an independent set of variables and the yield criterion used is one proposed by Ilyushin. Force/moment equilibrium at the junction of the branch and sphere is satisfied approximately by using one overal inequality constraint and the pressure is then optimized subject to the yield and equilibrium constraints. Results are presented for a range of geometrical parameters.
