Resumo

Abstract Few psychiatric syndromes have been as clearly described or had such effective treatment as war neuroses. Psychiatric illness caused by warfare has been encountered in every major 20th-century conflict. The literature on traumatic neuroses is not limited to reports from military expeditions, but ranges from psychological effects secondary to natural disasters, to reports on concentration camp survivors. These anecdotal studies include descriptions of rapid or prolonged therapeutic interventions, ranging from immediate affect catharsis to extensive psychoanalytic exploration. Varying hypnotherapeutic procedures offer the most rapid and thorough resolution to acute symptoms. The data for this report were collected over a 10-yr experience in the treatment of acute and chronic traumatic neuroses due to combat in the Vietnam conflict.
