ResumoThe precipitation of proteins with polyethylene glycol (PEG) of various average molecular weights was studied. It was found that the specificity of precipitation, that is the ratio of desired protein and total protein, can be improved by using PEG fractions of lower average molecular weight than the generally employed PEG 6000. Specificity increases with decreasing average molecular weight of PEG. Purification of α-glucosidase from crude yeast extract by fractional precipitation with PEG 400 is found comparable to gel chromatography.
