ResumoOn the eve of the re-establishment of the Republic in France, Jules Verne, in Autour de la Lune, seeks to render current the political meaning of a narrative he had started in De la Terre a la Lune and suspended during the period of the Second Republic. This essay assumes that the moon journey, which resumes during the War of Secession, spans the years 1848-1852, and which outlived the proclamation of the Selenite Republic, is an allegory of a political project associating American expansionism and French universalism. Here, techno-scientific vulgarization gives way to a confrontation oftwo sets of lies-political propaganda and literary fiction.
