ResumoThis historical analysis explores Kenyan press representation of environmentalist Wangari Maathai's 1989–1990 protest against the ruling party's plans to construct a 60-story skyscraper in a Nairobi park. I argue that an inconsistency in gender representation coincides with an instance of “weak hegemony,” an historical moment characterized by a dramatic, if temporary, shift in alliances engaged in the struggle to gain popular consent. The case study illustrates how such moments can be exploited for political advocacy.
