Resumo

“We’re looking for an expert witness to defend a radiologist who is accused of missing a lesion on a CT scan of the head,” said the defense attorney to the prospective witness. “I’ve looked at the scan and I’ll be glad to testify as an expert,” was the reply. “Are you steadfast and consistent in your opinions?” “Yes, of course.” “Are you thin-skinned or do you get easily rattled?” “No, of course not.” “Is your radiologic knowledge current, rather than rusty?” “Yes, of course.” “Do you have the heart to testify according to your beliefs, even under a tough and well-oiled cross-examination by the opposing attorney?” “Why are you asking me all these questions-are you afraid I won’t hold up on the witness stand?” (Fig. 1).
