ResumoVascular access in pediatric patients can be difficult and frustrating. Simply gathering the necessary materials to place a line can take more time than actually inserting the catheter. In the past, the size of the patient and the crudeness of the catheters limited line placement. Today, technologic improvements in catheter design and imaging methods have significantly facilitated venous access. Pediatricians and pediatric surgeons can select from a wide assortment of catheters and novel anatomic sites that previously were thought not available to vascular access. This article discusses the various methods available for venous access and their relative indications, advantages, and disadvantages (Table 1).
