Equilibria of chromium(III) complex formation with semi-xylenol orange in an ethanolic aqueous solution

Abstract A potentiometric and spectrophotometric study of the complex formation of Cr(III) with Semi-Xylenol Orange (SXO or H 4 SXO) in ethanolic solution is reported. Chromium(III) reacts with SXO very slowly, however, the reaction rate was accelerated in ethanolic solution. The complex was made in 50 v/v% ethanol-water, but the equilibria were investigated after dilution to 25% ethanol. Three complex species, CrHSXO, CrSXO − and Cr(OH)SXO 2− , have been found to be formed and their formation constants were determined.
