ResumoMetal and alloy monolayer films on an unlike substrate are a more or less ubiquitous phenomenon as a consequence of segregation effects in metallic multicomponent materials. The properties of these films, however, determine the whole surface physics and surface chemistry of these materials. In the present wotk, as an example, the properties of evaporated monolayer Cu, Au and CuAu monolayer films are examined with respect to their geometrical structure and growth mode by means of LEED and PAX, with respect to their interaction energies within the overlayers and with the substrate by means of TDS, and with respect to their electronic properties such as band structure and surface potential by means of photoelectron spectroscopy. Comparison is also made to the properties of CuAu bulk alloys as well as to Ag, Au and AgAu monolayer films on Ru(001).
