Resumo

Lupus anticoagulants (LA) belong to the heterogeneous group of antiphospholipid antibodies (APA). These antibodies seem to be directed against complexes of phospholipids and proteins (l-4). Lupus anticoagulants interfere with PL-dependent coagulation assays, giving prolonged clotting times. However, the clinical significance lies in the increased frequency of arterial and venous thrombosis and pregnancy complications seen in patients with LA. These clinical findings remain to be explained, although a number of mechanisms have been proposed (5-8).
