Resumo

Abstract The use of Vito Volterra's hereditary model for representing viscoelastic properties in dynamical systems is illustrated. Basically, the model is a series connection of m standard linear elements whose mathematical formulation is convenient for the solution of dynamical problems. Two examples are given: the dynamical response of a small hereditary wire; and uniaxial wave propagation in a hereditary bar. Another convenience of this model is the fact that the internal dissipation is easily formulated and the parameters may be easily adjusted to represent the actual dynamical response of any given material.
