The year 1983 marked the 10th anniversary of the introduction of computed tomography (CT) in the United Slates. In 1978 this diagnostic technique was still the focus of intense controversy,1 , 2 primarily because of its cost. Considered by physicians to be revolutionary and a major advance, it was widely regarded as an example of "technology running wild" by those who focused on the increasing cost of medical care, including health planners, regulatory agencies, and politicians.
