ResumoAlthough the introduction of imipenem (initially thienamycin) heralded much anticipation from the development of other carbapenems, this group of beta-lactam anfimicrobial agents has been limited to the earliest introductory member. In spite of great potential, the metabolic instability encountered with this chemical class has precluded the availability of clinical useful compounds. Drs. Duenas and Barriere review the antibacterial activity of several of this unique class of agents. UPDATE ON THE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF THE CARBAPENEMS
