Resumo

The meaning of Donatello's bronze statue of David in the Museo Nazionale of Florence has remained elusive. The problem of interpretation is compounded by lack of documentation concerning the commission of the work and its original location. Its dating has been a matter of much dispute, though it is generally placed in the years between 1430 and 1440. First mentioned in 1469 as in the courtyard of the Medici Palace, the statue was moved in 1495 to the courtyard of the Palazzo Vecchio.1
