Prestigious artists actives in the artistic milieu of late 19th-century Rio de Janeiro, such as Zeferino da Costa, Rodolpho Bernardelli, Pedro Weingärtner and Henrique Bernardelli used photographs as part of their creative processes, as a way to make their works noted or as a teaching tool in their classes at the School of Fine Arts. In this article we will not only highlight the use of this modern technology by these artists, but we will seek to shed light on their performances as amateurs or dilettantes photographers.
