Resumo

The surface compartment model (SCM) theory of ion transport across membranes focuses on electrical double layer processes and describes the ion fluxes across excitable membranes in terms of electrodiffusion. When the SCM equations are solved under the conditions of oscillating electric fields, there are ion concentration changes in the electrical double layers that are frequency and amplitude dependent. These concentration changes explain the low frequency optima observed in the stimulation of some biological processes, and also suggest that transference effects may contribute to the permeability changes of membranes following large electrical stimuli.
