Abstract The effects of synthesis parameters on the property of hetero-atom Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite membranes were investigated for zeolite membrane grown onto porous α-alumina supports. The zeolite membranes synthesized were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and single gas permeation. Good crystals are a prerequisite for the formation of the perfect membrane. Lower alkalinity and higher SiO2/Fe2O3 favor the formation of pure Fe-ZSM-5 structure and the insertion of Fe into the framework of zeolite. Under the condition of higher alkalinity and lower SiO2/Fe2O3, impurities such as quartz and oxide of iron, which hinder the Fe-ZSM-5 formation were easily produced. Ageing at lower temperature and longer stirring time were preferred for Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite membrane. Under optimum synthesis conditions, H2/C3H8 and H2/C4H10 ideal selectivities were over 25.80 and 36.70 at 25 °C for the synthesized Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite membrane.
