Resumo

We have analyzed the relationship between the parental and the recombinant DNA in crosses performed with bacteriophage f1. To label the parental DNA, we used the modification imparted to the DNA of f1 by a host of the B restriction-modification type, lysogenic for P1. The parents used had an amber mutation in gene II; their genomes were expected to be unable to multiply in the host prior to a recombination event. The results obtained show that a considerable fraction of the cells, in which a recombination event occurs release a recombinant whose genome consists at least in part of parental DNA. They also confirm that f1 genomes having an amber mutation in gene II are totally or almost totally unable to multiply in a nonpermissive host.
