Resumo

A survey is given of the principles underlying dispersion relations in elementary-particle physics, and some of their phenomenological and dynamical applications are treated. The general nature of dispersion relations and their connection with causality are examined, particular emphasis being placed on the role they have recently played in strong-coupling physics. An account is given of the approximation scheme obtained by combining dispersion relations with unitarity and which, it is hoped, will provide a basis for calculations. Proved and conjectured dispersion relations are written down and the plausibility of the conjectures is discussed. The calculations so far performed, and the results they have achieved, are summarized.
