Resumo

The final and most impressive event to be held in commemoration of the three-hundredth anniversary of the death of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–82), was the monumental exhibition of his work that was organized as a joint enterprise by the Museo del Prado in Madrid and the Royal Academy of Arts in London and shown in both cities. The attendance records at both institutions and the massive sales of the substantial catalogues (the Spanish edition ran out of print even before the closing of the exhibition in Madrid) may be the best indication that the critical fortunes of the most important Spanish painter of the Late Baroque, whom posterity first exalted, then undervalued and neglected, may be on the rise again.
