ResumoIn the beginning, we learn to categorize neurologic signs and are pleased to be able to recognize that a patient has a sign such as tremor . At the next level of heuristic progression, textbooks list various kinds of tremor, and we learn to subclassify a patient’s particular type of tremor, look for possible causal factors, and employ the recommended management strategies. Finally, research pursues pathomechanisms hoping to define the physiologic and biochemical abnormalities underlying a particular type of tremor. Then we can name it according to first principles or at least add to the old nomenclature (e.g., tremor at rest of PD) a few words describing its root cause, thus removing it from the general, nonspecific category of tremors.
