The title of this 1902 essay by Thomas Mann became a catchword for the incredible attraction the Bavarian capital held for artists of all kinds and genres during the days before World War I, so much so, indeed, that even today one often finds it quoted in praise of the city and its cultural ambitions. One of the city's artistic centers was a group of Russian artists that collaborated on experimental new theatre forms and later banded together to form the Neue Kiinstlervereinigung Miinchen (New Artists Union Munich).
