THE Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) has a relatively brief history as a laboratory animal. A program was begun in 1957 at the Department of Poultry Husbandry, Davis, with the objective of investigating the usefulness of this species in genetic and physiological research (Wilson et al., 1961). While the Japanese quail appears far advanced in its domestication, when this research was initiated we could not find published reports on its use in selection experiments. It was felt worthwhile, therefore, to investigate how body size of quail would respond to artificial selection. Results of two selection experiments for growth rate in quail have recently been reported (Marks and Lepore, 1968; Godfrey, 1968). PROCEDURES Population structure.
