Resumo

During the past decade, there has been a remarkable shift in the preparation of pediatric patients scheduled for surgery to the outpatient setting. Many patients having major procedures must be prepared as outpatients for hospital admission on the day of surgery. Advances in anesthesia techniques have paralleled these changes. However, primary care pediatricians involved in evaluating children preoperatively have not been substantial participants in these developments. A recent survey indicated that pediatricians frequently lack adequate information about preoperative management and believe that their participation is neither respected nor appreciated by anesthesiologists or surgeons.
