Lancet. 1996; 348: 339-340 Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (114) Google Scholar report on six suicides in which overdose with citalopram was found. Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are increasingly used in clinical practice and, as these workers rightly emphasise, are less toxic than tricyclic antidepressants. In the six reported deaths, citalopram concentrations were high and didesmethylcitalopram concentrations were low. Concentrations of other drugs were very low and could not be implicated. There have been reports of non-fatal citalopram intoxication at high doses. 2 Dencker SJ Høpfner Petersen HE Side-effect profile of citalopram and reference antidepressants in depression.
