FRONDA (1925) presented data showing the diurnal variation at two-hour intervals in the body temperature of several breeds of chickens, and stated that the temperature of the room had no apparent effect on the body temperature curve. However, he did not state the room temperatures. In connection with data on the effect of air temperature on egg size, Bennion and Warren (1933) reported that the average body temperature of several Leghorn females was more than 2°F. higher under "high" air temperature than under "moderate" air temperature, but they apparently made relatively few observations. It was considered of at least academic interest to determine whether air temperature had any effect on the body temperature of hens, and, since individual hen batteries were being used to some extent, to determine also the effect of close confinement on the body temperature.
