Abstract The optical spectrum of the 17th-magnitude radio galaxy PKS 1345+12 is found to be quite similar to the spectra of narrow-line radio galaxies with respect to emission-line strength, absorption- line strength, and continuum strength and shape. However, the spectrum of PKS 1345+12 is unusual among the narrow-line radio galaxies in having two redshift systems-one containing the high-ionization lines of [0 iii] and [Ne iii], and the other containing (at a Az = +0.0008 with respect to the first system) the Balmer lines and the low-ionization lines of [0 1], [0 ii], [N ii], and [S ii]. Also, the profiles of the lines in PKS 1345+12 fall into two groups, both of which have full widths at half-maximum (FWHM) much larger than the typical narrow-line radio galaxy, and definite blueward wings. The Balmer lines and the high-ionization lines have FWHM of 1600 km s - 1, and the low-ionization lines have FWHM of 1200 km s -`. The observed differences between PKS 1345+12 and other narrow-line radio galaxies may possibly be understood if the large velocity dispersion and general expansion evident in PKS 1345+12 magnify the differences between emission lines emitted in different zones of a three-zone model suggested by observations of NGC 1068.
