Resumo

The American Dietetic Association (ADA), the Society for Nutrition Education (SNE), and the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) have a history of involvement iii school-based nutrition programs and services. In a 1990 ADA position statement on nutrition education for the public, the Association identified children and adolescents as important target audiences, and schools as appropriate settings for nutrition education (1). Furthermore, the ADA position statement on child nutrition services (2) identified nutrition education as an essential nutrition service. SNE has published a conceptual framework for school-based nutrition education called "The SNE Concepts for Food and Nutrition Education" (3). SNE has also developed a position paper (4) that defines the functions and qualifications of nutrition education specialists in school systems. In 1992, ASFSA endorsed "Creating Policy for Nutrition Integrity in Schools," a model nutrition policy outlining recommended concepts for a comprehensive approach to providing food and nutrition services in schools. A year later, Nutrition Integrity Standards were jointly released by ASFSA and the National Food Service Management Institute (5).
