ResumoDickinson Richards and his long-time collaborator, André Cournand, will always be remembered for their critical roles in the introduction of cardiac catheterization as a tool for the study of the cardiopulmonary function and the diagnosis of heart disease.On the basis of their pioneering efforts to develop cardiac catheterization, they shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Werner Forssmann. 1 Dickinson Woodruff Richards was born on October 30, 1895, in Orange, New Jersey (Fig. 1).He was educated at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and received an AB degree from Yale in 1917.
